This section is a part of the chapter: Promising Anti-mycobacterial Potentiality of Indian Noteworthy Plant Argemone mexicana Linn.
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease and has been considered a major health problem with 95% of cases & 98% of deaths from very ancient times. TB remains a leading cause of infectious death worldwide, and poverty is a major driver. This is occurring in developing countries including India. Mycobacterium tuberculosis’s etiological agent has haunted human populations for millennia, shaping societies and influencing historical events. Despite the availability of many effective chemotherapeutic agents, the emergence of multidrug resistance has increased the complications in the treatment of TB. TB presents as “latent” TB and active TB disease, and the treatment for each is different. These chemotherapeutic agents are classified into main two types: first-line agents & second-line agents. Isoniazid is excellent at the former, and rifampin is excellent at the latter.
